"Yes, you read that right. People who participate in extreme tourism are willingly risking their lives and safety, not out of necessity, but out of… excitement? Fun? I can’t wrap my head around it, either."

A really fun vaction for me is mountain biking in a remote forest and camping while I do it, which incidentally costs nothing. There is some danger in that, and yes it does make it more exciting. I've been really lost, hurt while alone, and almost froze to death once, but that doesn't stop me from doing it again. The not knowing how things will turn out makes it an adventure. Riding a bicycle on the street while visiting a new modern city is dangerous as hell in itself.

Other people on vacation scuba dive, parasail, mountain climb, downhill ski, sky dive, hunt with guns, water ski, bungee jump, zip line, get blind drunk, gamble, have sex with strangers, and do all kinds of other dangerous stuff. I saw paramedics and the river patrol attending to someone who had wrecked a rental jet ski on Tuesday. Everyone isn't into lying by the pool at a resort, sightseeing bus tours, and canned amusements on their vacations, just boring people.
