When I was kid, there was a man on our street who had been a navigator in a B-24 during WWII. His plane was shot down over Romania, and he spent three years as a POW of the Nazi Germans. The experience turned his hair white at 24 years old. He said that most of the privileged officers in the Stalag who had gone to good colleges and had lived with servants either lost their shit or killed themselves. The men that survived and kept it together were the hillbillies, share croppers, and kids from the slums, because they knew how to survive.
