Van Gogh painted an exact duplicate of the painting that was attacked, which is on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Van Gogh painted 12 paintings of sunflowers, and one (F459) was incinerated during an USAAF air raid on Tokyo on August 6, 1945, the same day that the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. I doubt that anyone noticed the destruction right away because anyone who was near the painting burned up with it.
