To get a good idea of what the warfare in Ukraine looks like now in the present Donetsk hot spot, the best movie to see would be 1917. The Ukranians and the "Russian backed seperatists" have been fighting over this particular piece of turf since 2014, so the dug in defensive lines on both sides are deep and extensive, just like the Western Front in WW I. The ground around the positions is a mass of shell holes, just like the Somme or Verdun.
The only differences are that infantry are carrying automatic weapons of the same calibers of WWI rifles, they are wearing light weight body armor, and the artillery is more accurate. There are also a shitload of landmines, which will deter an "Over the top!" type of attack. But it's a slow grinding war of attrition.
Right now it's muddy, so operations have slowed in most sectors to the sniping and mortar attacks that have been going on for 8 years, and could go on for eight more if the Ukranians and Russians don't sit down and talk peace.
The defense budget of Ukraine in 2021 was only 5 billion dollars, which is laughable considering that the Russians were already in their country. Finland spent a billion more and they have five times fewer people. Outsiders are almost completely funding Ukraine's war effort.
