He didn't have a significant other or children apparently, and suffered major brain and leg injuries in a car accident in his youth, and couldn't drive as a result. It also appears that he was more of a portrait photographer than a photojournalist, since that was his business.

The article noted that police officers on Capitol Hill scooped water out of a fountain with traffic cones to put the fire out, and he had to be flown to the hospital in a helicopter. And that is a problem with committing suicide. Some strangers are going to have to clean up after you, and that makes it a dick move.
