"There has to be a revolution in the way we value money and materialism."
How about a solution that doesn't involve a "revolution"? Because that seems really unlikely. I always buy gifts, when I buy them, from local artisans, and eat or get coffee at locally owned restaurtants whenever I can. Everywhere has gift cards now too. I've never lived in a town that was so small that there weren't artists and a diner. You may spend more money and it will limit your selection, but the gifts will be cool and unique and the food will be better. Going to galleries or arts and crafts shows, or being a regular in a mom and pop eatery or coffee shop is a good way to experience your community in real life, rather than the fake online community.
With that being said, I've seen people quit on the spot in small owner operated businesses as well. If they are not YOUR mom & pop, you're just another worker.
