The US economic "golden era" of which you speak was the result of the destruction of most of Europe and Asia's industry by WW II. The USA had an almost complete monopoly on a lot of products and materials simply because our factories and transportation systems were untouched and theirs was a bunch of rubble. The Europeans and Japan rebuilt with our help, and it all went to hell.
