The US Census bureau estimates that there are 5.7 million vacation homes in the USA. I know people that have a cabin in the mountains and others that have a beach house, and yet many more who rent either as they wish. I've always viewed owning a second home as yet something else to worry about. There are state parks around that have lovely cabins that can be hired for a fairly low price.
