The total Ivy League endowments are approximately $192,600,000,000, and that is just the Ivy League schools and not the other big private or state universities, and a great deal of that money could be used to promote or teach the humanities along with the billions and billions that are already being spent, so the idea that funding for the humanities is receding is like taking a glass of water out of a swimming pool and saying that it is receding. The number of people in this world who appreciate philosophy, serious literature, classical music, and the other fine arts has always been small. In 1960 only 7% of the population had a bachelor's degree, and now it is almost 40%. But did people on average get more intelligent, and more able to appreciate the humanities? No they did not, and they have so many other distractions now. Tell someone that their advanced knowledge of Nintendo video games is somehow inferior to your knowledge of Coleridge or Spinoza, and they will laugh in your face.
