The title of the article doesn’t really go with the substance of it. Public school education in its present form is already community centered, since people doing the same thing together are a community. That’s why all of the children attending a given school essentially get the same program. Giving each student a learning program tailored to their individual needs and desires is fine, but it takes the whole idea of “community” out of the picture since they will all be doing different things in a different way, and possibly in a different place.
I’ll also add that if I had been able to chose my own course of study as a child, I wouldn’t be able to balance a checkbook now since I hate math.
