The second KKK which appeared in 1915 after The Birth of a Nation was released was primarily a multi-level marketing business based on the many fraternal clubs like the Owls and Lions that appeared at the time. The Kleagles or local organizers got to keep half of the money from dues and sales of the robes and other materials. Two early marketing professionals, Mary Tyler and Edward Young Carke, put out a successful sales campaign that coinsided with their Anti-Saloon League campaign. People forget that the Klan was a big supporter of Prohibition, and that was one of the things that led to their rapid growth in the 1920s, and subsequent decline when Prohibition was repealed. In 1944 the IRS served that version of the KKK with a tax bill of $685,000 for back taxes and it dissolved.
