The Marquis de Sade had a habit of locking up women who didn't do what he wanted them to do. On October 18, 1763, de Sade hired a prostitute named Jeanne Testard who refused to bend over for anal sex, and so he locked her up and abused her for 12 hours. She escaped and de Sade only avoided prosecution by groveling before the King. He was also placed under police surveillance.

On April 3, 1768, de Sade convinced a German widow named Rose Keller to come to his home to clean it for pay. Once there he locked her up and whipped her until she escaped 2 days later to report his cruelty to the authorities. de Sade was briefly locked up, but Keller was bribed to drop charges.

On June 27, 1772, de Sade hired four prostitutes and again tried to force them into anal sex with him and his manservant. Then he poisoned them with aphrodisiacs in chocolate. de Sade and his manservant were sentenced to death, but he escaped prison.

In the winter of 1774, de Sade enacted theatrical sexual performances with his wife and 5 children ages 14-16, until he was forced to flee to Italy to escape arrest. He returned to France in 1776 and did the same thing again.

de Sade was involved with the far left in the French Revolution and even wrote a eulogy for the dastardly Marat who was assassisnated by a young woman. He was critical of Robespierre however, and was locked up for a year until the dictator had been beheaded. When he emeged from prison he had been reduced to complete poverty because the revolutionaries had seized and pillaged his property. His wife also divorced him.

de Sade sent Napoleon a copy of Juliette which outraged him, and he ordered the writer locked up for the rest of his life without trial.

de Sade eventually ended up being locked up in an asylum and while there he started having sex with a 14 girl who was the daughter of an employee there.

He was buried at the hospital, and his skull was removed to be studied by phrenologists.His son burned all of his remaining manuscripts.

No matter what he said about class, de Sade used his power, status, and money to have sex with the children of the servant class, and to lock up and degrade women. I think you definitely have to consider the messenger in this case.
