The example of neighbors in the past gives yet another cheery view of the past not based in any reality whatsoever. The Old Amish still live like people did a couple of hundred years ago, and they have barn raisings and whatnot, but you can't get around the fact that they are a weirdo religious cult with a strict patriarchy and a lot of rules. If someone does something the patriarchs don't like, they are shunned. No one is allowed to interact with them in any way. That hardly sounds positive, and the point of it is to isolate people until they complied with the patriarchs. It sounds a lot like cancel culture today, but cancel culture doesn't apply in real life.

The reason why there are so many different religious denominations in the USA is because rather than be shunned, people started their own churches because they had the freedom to do that here.
