The big problem with Masaobu Fukuoka's techniques of farming other than much lower crop yields, is that it caused serious problems with his neighbors. He never asked them how they felt about his unconventional techniques, which none of them adopted because they couldn't make a living with them. The seeds from random plants including weeds which he allowed to grow on his property blew on to his neighbors' crops. He watered whenever he felt like, including when water levels were low for everybody. He also wasn't a very nice person apparently, like most people who think everyone else is wrong. His family is still mending relationships with the neighbors after his death.
I'm a long time vegetable gardener, and his techniques are ridiculous if you actually want to produce food, particularly if you have limited space. If you are going to do the work and use the water, you should go for the maximum yeild possible, and that means cultivation. If you want to get along well with others, that requires some work too.
