Humanity doesn't understand anything collectively. Humanity doesn't understand that you can't treat women like chattel, democracy is better than a dictatorship, and that you should never put ketchup on a hot dog.

Some people may understand this environmental issue and change their lifestyle accordingly, some people may understand this and continue to pursue their self interests regardless, but most people don't care. The whole idea is not on their radar. If they have the money and can afford it, they are going to heat, cool, drive, fly, buy, build, and consume just like they do now. If someone else is using a lot of energy and buying a lot of stuff, why shouldn't they if they want to?

Who is acting like they understand that unleashing infinite material desires on a finite planet can't go on? I don't see it, I just read people writing about it. Something humans are super good at is rationalizing everything they do.
