"She was first cousins to Queen Victoria and to her husband Prince Albert. They were amongst the most deranged and unhinged monarchs that history has ever witnessed.!"
I don't think that you understand the meaning of "deranged". You are talking about a woman that had a whole period of history and a great many other things named after her. She was one of the most beloved leaders that has ever lived on Earth. Maximillian's patriarchal attitudes about women weren't deranged either, they were common among all men of the time, regardless of class or nationality. They did not apply to Queen Victoria however.
Generally the relationship between Maximillian and Charlotte is portrayed as being quite romantic. They actually tried to spend time among the common people of Mexico, but they were in way over their heads, and were essentially tools of French Emperor Napoleon III. As the Mexican rebels under Juarez defeated the French colonial forces propping up the Emperor and Empress, Charlotte went through the courts of Europe quite pathetically begging for help for her husband, and was ignored everywhere. When the Mexican Empire fell, instead of running away Maximillian stayed and faced the firing squad like his followers in Mexico. Of course you skipped all of that.
