Public schools are failing in their primary mission of providing basic knowledge and marketable job skills to most students, but by all means let’s give them more to do to straighten out society. Hell, let’s put them to work on the infrastructure too, and the space program. For people who think that government is the answer to all problems, school is super important because it is the only time in someone’s life other than military service or incarceration when the government actually has control over them, and that’s only for the kids that go to public school. People that like government solutions also generally detest school choice, vouchers, and home schooling, because they want to make the best of the time that the state has a captive audience, the more captives the better. Whether or not students might benefit more from an education outside the public school system is immaterial.
