Paul McCartney was and probably still is a huge Motown fan, and recording one his songs with a Motown legend was a dream come true for him. If McCartney had recorded the song himself, it would have been more of the same schmaltz that Sir Paul is quite capable of, but having Stevie on the track makes it a great song because Stevie Wonder is always great. A problem with music videos in 1982 is that there were few of them by black artists, but Prince had a multi-racial band as was Culture Club, and Michael Jackson’s videos had multi-racial casts. I still go to live shows when there’s not a pandemic going on, and the racial make-up of any given band is completely irrelevant now. Really. No one in the audience gives a shit, they just want to enjoy good music. In 1982 that may not have always been the case, and in that way there has been progress.
