Neither treatment for mental health issues nor for addiction is fun, nor is it easy. People can’t be cured of either, the effects can only be mitigated somewhat, and that can only be done if they are locked somewhere that they can regularly recieve their medication and talk treatment, and/or be kept away from drugs and alcohol. But when you are locking people up, the situation becomes very much like a jail, and no one likes jail. If someone is an addict, giving them “financial help” is not a good idea, and there are accomdations in many communities but they have rules, and that is a problem for a lot of the homeless. People are not sleeping on a piece of cardboard just because they lost their job. If they don’t know a single person who can put them on a couch they have problems that run deeper than not having a paycheck or someone to talk to. Of course nothing is stopping you or anyone else from inviting one of the street people into your homes, but I wouldn’t reccomend it. What I would reccommend is to talk to these folks and see how difficult the problem is to solve, and of course you could buy them a cup of coffee. There are homeless in every country by the way, except for police states where they do get locked up.

Historians of the future, if they have learned a good deal of the previous history of civilization, will not find anything we do now to be any more insane than previous generations, or their own.
