Most of the Rhine River ceased to be as it was naturally many, many years ago since humans have been tampering with it throughout recorded history. It has been straightening, dammed, had canals run beside it, removing water here and putting it in there, since the shovel was invented. It's magical alright, but a lot of that magic is due to human ingenuity. We have some beautiful rivers here in Pennsylvania, and it's the same thing. Rivers left to their own will unexpectedly rise up and kill everyone beside them and wreck their communities, so they have to be tamed.
