I've worked as a skilled blue collar building tradesman on and off most of my life, and am doing it now. There's a stratification in that too that is absolutely essential to conducting the work in an efficient, safe manner. The helpers or apprentices do the scut work like moving material, getting stuff from the truck, running cable, and keeping the worksite clean and safe. if someone has to crawl under something, haul a bunch of heavy material, or dig a hole, it's going to be them. Think you can dig a properly graded ditch? You can't until you are taught and practice it. They are learning how to do the job and all of the tools and parts, so they don't make as much money because what they do know is not worth as much as the more advanced workers.
The journeymen do the skilled work. They have the skills and know the tools and materials. They make the measurements, make the cuts, and secure everything together and test it if neccessary. There is a lot of hand to eye coordination involved with the tools and materials that they have mastered. They are responsible for keeping the helpers busy doing something productive and teaching them the job.
The master reads the blueprints, orders the material, lays out the job, deals with the foreman and inspectors, and marshals the journeymen and helpers to do the work. If a problem is encountered, they are responsible for sorting it out even if it means crawling into a sanitary sewer full of shit. Fulfilling the contract and making sure no one gets hurt is up to them, so yes they make more money and are given more deference than the other workers because they deserve it. You can't become a master without a lot of experience, on top of completing coursework and passing exams.
But notice what you just did there. You jumped right from a white collar worker teacher to a warehouse or fast food worker that can learn their job in an hour, and skipped all of those highly skilled workers that actually make the physical world work like they don't even exist. And people wonder why those skilled workers love Trump.
