You're wrong about that. I live in Pennsylvania and at the beginning of the 20th Century the entire state was virtually denuded of trees. Now the forest cover is over 56% and we have so many beavers and deer that they have become nuisance animals. There's even an annual black bear hunt now. The reason for the improvement is fossil fuels. They could stop burning wood and using it to build everything. The Ohio Valley is absolutely beautiful now compared to when I was a child and it was full of heavy industry, but it took hundreds of thousands of well paid workers losing their job for that to happen. The Rust Belt is very green, and the rivers are very clean.
