Intentional lying and fudging are exactly the same thing. People that fudge financial records or court testimony go to prison. Engineers that fudge data have things collapse on them. If it's important enough to share with a lot of people, it's too important to make shit up about it. But if the point of the story is to make yourself or a book you wrote look incredibly good, by all means fudge away. That's how you sell.
