In January 2017 PRC security personnel apparently abducted billionaire tech investor Xiao Jianhua from the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong. He is still being held by the Chinese government. There have been several other cases (That we know about.) where the PRC has abducted Chinese citizens in Hong Kong, and even in other countries. So Hong Kong’s dropping the Fugitive Offenders amendment due to protests falls under the heading of “So what?”. It won’t materially change anything in Hong Kong, since the government on the mainland can act with impunity because they are a police state who can ignore laws as they wish. Stopping the Fugitive Offender law was a symbolic gesture, but radically changing the economy is not.
