I went to the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on the National Mall in October 2010 with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. There were at least 200,000 people there, and far too few porta-johns. Many people had their cute snarky hand written signs. There were so many packed together that I went to Kelly's Irish Times on Capitol Hill to enjoy a beverage in a comfortable chair while I watched it.
It was the usual Daily Show business with a lot of music. At the end Stewart got sincere and sappy. As I walked through the crowd afterwards, I heard a passeryby remark "Maybe this could be a movement!".
Six years later a TV personality and World Wrestling Federation villain got elected President of the USA.
