I was on a USN aircraft carrier in all oceans except the Pacific in the 1980s, and aquatic mammals used to race the ship on occaision. Whales, groups of dolphins, orcas going so fast you couldn't believe it. It was magical, and standing on the sponson you could only cheer them. Carriers are really fast, so they always lost but made a good effort. Sometimes this was going on while we were launching F-14s.

We always had a Soviet warship or trawler tailing us because it was the Cold War, and I guess the sea mammals raced them too.
