I was brought up to be an "upstander". It's called chivalry. You decide that certain behavior is not going to be tolerated because it is wrong, and then you step in and try reason, and then you try emotion, and then you go into ass kicking mode. Sometimes you have to go into ass kicking mode immediately because someone else is being physically injured or in danger. Of course that is when you are risking something more than hurt feelings.
