I think this article misses the real point of the Confederate memorial statues like this one. After a battle the dead were generally thrown into mass graves, unless the soldier was a high ranking officer or came from a family with money. The Union Army established cemeteries and graves registration including Arlington while the war was going on, and after the war Union war dead were dug up, identified if possible, and placed in the new National Cemeteries.

Most of the Confederate dead listed on the monument were buried in a ditch somewhere with dead horses, other detritus of battle, and random men. The Victorians were very big on death stuff. Look at their crazy cemeteries. This is the headstone to those boys. With that being said, everyone who knew those fellows is long gone. It's not a piece of art and if most citizens are offended, away with it.
