I regularly talk to street people wherever I am, and I give them coffee, food, and money as well. They always have something interesting to say when they aren't hitting you up for cash. Someone who is sleeping or begging in a space being used by other folks to move from one place to another is being disrespectful to everyone in the community. Honestly, I can appreciate some nice urban building or landscaping design, but not with someone passed out in the middle of it. That's not what the space is for. Most of the homeless don't do that, but the fact is that they are all on the street because they have burned down every bridge with every person they know that has a couch. Or because the life suits them, and they don't want to get with the program even if it means sleeping on a piece of cardboard every night. Neither detox nor inpatient mental health care is very fun, and both are akin to jail since you are locked in an institution with a lot of other troubled people. We should absolutely respect the homeless just as much as we respect any other stranger. But we shouldn't have to put up with shit from them either.
