I learned how to dap in the military in the mid-1970s from the black fellows I was serving with. I learned how to do the dozens too, so don’t let me get started on your fat ugly momma. When you put a bunch of young guys together they’ll find a way to kill the time. But that there is much more to the dap than some young dude representing is a trifle overwrought. Just because someone daps with you, and we’re even talking two black guys here, doesn’t mean they are going to lend you money, help you move, or let you date their sister. It only represents your solidarity in the moment, not some kind of deep bond. It’s also something to do that is fun and looks cool.
