I have derived more spiritual insight from reading fiction and watching classic films than any other source except experience. Herman Hesse influenced my spiritual outlook from my youth, as did Graham Greene, and Flannery O'Connor, Dickens, Conrad, Yukio Mishima, and countless other writers over the course of my life. I've seen films that have shaped my spiritual views profoundly. Watch Martin Scorcese's 'Silence' or Herzog's 'Fitzcaraldo' or Kurosawa's 'Derzu Uzala' or Fellini's '81/2' and be changed, like by all great art.
