Hippies were never Leftists. The Whole Earth Catalogue is the Bible of hippies and right-wing survivalists alike, and there is a lot of crossover. The activists that fought against the Vietnam War were not hippies, but student radicals. Long haired dudes at their rallies didn't want to get drafted. The people that organized the rock festivals were capitalists, and the people that played in them were entertainers. Being a hippy is something that you are, not something that you do. But should you ever find yourself in a local environmental and/or conservation organization meeting, the number of Birkenstock wearing women without make-up and men with ponytails is striking. Community gardening and CSAs probably wouldn't exist without hippies. If you want to continue to make believe that you have anything to do with the folks in Chiapas or Syria, you would never see that though as you would just be looking at your computer all the time. Real hippies are into real things.
