Germany lost between 6.9 to 7.4 million people killed out of a population of 69 million, so that is one out of ten. In addition a third of the 3 million German troops in Russian captivity died and never came home. The idea that everyone didn't know someone that was killed by the war is pretty ridiculous.
Every major city was bombed by the RAF and USAAF. At least 4.8 million housing units were destroyed in Germany. Of the 54 largest cities with over 100K population in Germany, only four survived without significant damage. Take a look at the post-war German map on the linked story if you don't believe it.
