Former scholastic debater here. If I'm in an argument with someone else, I'm in it to win it, but I am willing to let my opponent set the boundaries and level of the discussion. Since I'm right, they'll start raising the stakes and heat by bringing in shit that has nothing to do with the issue at hand, the "remind and conquer" strategy, because of the weakness in their arguments. This expands the area of conflict, and you have to escalate to keep up with that. But name calling effectively is an admission of defeat, so I never go there since it's childish, as is breaking stuff and tearing up pictures. That people brick 2,000 dollar smartphones is astounding to me but I've seen it happen, outside of a bar even.
