The three failed US bridge projects you mentioned faced huge public backlash. Diane Feinstein was against the Southern Crossing before she was for it. No one bucks the people in Georgetown over a highway. They had the power and the money to stop the Three Sisters Bridge, and the bridge would have stopped the creation of the great C&O Canal national park that came later in any case. The Long Island Sound Link came close to fruition at the waining of Moses' power, so it didn't happen. And yes, everyone should read The Power Broker. Robert Moses was a dreamer, but some people's dreams are other people's nightmares. He built the elevated railway that the incredible High Line park in Manhattan is on, and I don't think his name is even mentioned on the descriptive material there.
I live in Pittsburgh, PA, which has more bridges than any other city in the world, up to 446 depending how you count them, and you may have noticed that one of them fell into a ravine a couple of years ago. Maintaining that many bridges is a big deal, and you can't close them all at one time. They replaced the Fern Hollow Bridge in less than a year by the way. Taking care of the bridges we already have should be a priority. Like building a bridge, it can't be done by random yahoos.
