During periods of being broke, a key element of my diet came from convenience stores that sold hot dogs on the rolling broiler like 7-11, Sheetz, and Wawa. They would have a little condiment bar with tubs of sauerkraut, jalepenos, and chopped onions among other things, and there were dispensers for hot cheese food and some kind of finely ground meat chili that wasn't made from ribeye. You opened the cardboard carton flat, put in your hot dog, and then filled the whole thing, both halves, with food, mostly the chili. You needed a plastic spork to eat it. If it was two dogs for a dollar you did two and could barely balance one in each hand. If you were hungry enough, it might as well have been filet mignon at McCormick and Schmick's.
I believe that the pandemic killed those little buffets. Now they just have plastic packets of condiments.
