Any country that people aren't allowed to leave is simply f'ed up, and I think you will find that applies to most of those countries as well. It shows that socialism either has to be a completely isolated system, or worldwide, since it can't survive next to a vastly superior capitalist society. No one tried to go over the Berlin Wall into East Germany. People have run away in rickety boats from Cuba.
People are self interested, and that simply can't be changed, so yes I would agree with Dr. Friedman. Even the religious have the hope of heaven in their behavior, and the socialists are waiting for the big revolution, although few of the ones outside of North Korea or Cuba live collectively because it sucks.
